Playing the Game

Text-based RPGs like TempusMUD require very little software on the player's computer. All you need is a terminal or terminal emulator, and a telnet program. Both these items are available for almost every computer system.

Minimally, you should be able to play by clicking here. This will fire up a java terminal and connect to the MUD automatically. If your browser is broken and this does not work, you may be able to fix it by editing the preferences for your browser.

You can connect to the MUD without using a browser at all by simply doing one of the following things:

Please note that the MUD makes use of colored text to make your life easier and more interesting. If your terminal emulator does not support the standard ANSI colored text, then you should seek out one that does. It makes a world of difference.

It turns out that the plain telnet client through which you connect to the MUD is not the best possible client to use. There are other clients out there, designed specifically for playing MUDS, which allow you to set up complicated aliases, perform actions automatically based on events which you see happening on the MUD, maintain a command history, and scores of other things.
