I started this Journal the day I got back from visiting the city, Shade. The Dragonspine Mountains had not been heavily explored at that time. I however, took my pack, filled it with several months worth of rations, honed up on my Goodberry spell, and went into the mountains.
Starting players
- The Tower of Modrian
- An obvious starting point, the tower has facilities to improve your stats until level 6, practice your skills, buy food, drink, and equipment... shower, rent, and hone your fighting skills.
- The Cock Fighting Arena
- Located to the north of the Mercenary's Quarter, this is a shady establishment devoted to entertainment of some of the rougher characters which frequent the Quarter. There are several kinds of fighting chickens in there, so be sure to consider each one.
- The Militant Monastery
- Located in the forest to the northeast of Modrian. The monastery is populated with monks in training of several levels, as well as a dark area full of imps. A path is said to lead east through the forest from the north road, leading to the monastery.
- Kobold Tunnels
- A small tunnel has been discovered leading into the cliffs which line the beach of the Misty Sea. Apparently, this tunnel leads into the lair of some vile kobolds. The tunnel may be found in a small cove located to the east of the fishing village.
- The Black Wood
- Strange occurrences have been reported in the area of a long abandoned town northeast of the city. Frightened townspeople have come back babbling incoherently of a great evil, and dead that walk. You will probably need a thief, though, to open the passage.
- Haon-Dor
- The large forest to the west of the city holds many secrets, as well as dangers. You have heard that there are wolves in the forest, and you've heard rumor of a spider kingdom deep within the forest.
- The Halfling Village
- Some way to the southeast of Modrian is said to lie a small village of halflings, nestled into the hills.
- The Giant Anthill
- Travelers through the great western desert have reported the appearance of ants of humongous size. The braver of these claim to have even seen the mound in which the gargantuan queen births her brood.
- The Battleground
- Tales tell of the sight of a horrific battle that took place long ago near the city of Modrian. Unfortunately, the defeated army doesn't seem to have given up the fight, continuing the epic struggle past the grave. This ancient battlefield is found east of Modrian, southwest of the crossroads.
Low-level Groups and Mid-level Players
- The Haunted Temple
- South of the militant monastery lies an old, seemingly abandoned temple. Stories of a hideous tragedy in the temple tell of an event that left the place defiled and filled with evil. It is rumored that the ghosts of the old inhabitants fight to this day with the demons and undead creatures which have taken residence there. (Low level characters should think twice about going here alone.)
- The Sewers of Modrian
- You have heard that all sorts of dubious creatures reside in the filth of the sewer of the great city. Cautious gossip has referred to a gang of thieves somewhere down there, as well as a treacherous tunnel into the cemetery of old Modrian.
- The Chessboard of Araken
- Duke Araken, the corrupt ruler of the local area under the authority of the Empire, resides in a large castle southwest of Modrian. At the center of the ground level of the castle can be found a great marble chessboard, with lifesize magical pieces.
- North Istan Wood
- The farmlands north of Istan are also home to a sawmill full of diligent lumberjacks. The populace has long called for an end to the unending chopping and screeching axe noises, but no one has ever made any effort to have the mill closed down.
- The Western Desert
- The airy desert is home to numerous species of heat loving creatures. Gossipers in the nearby city of New Thalos also tell of a civilization of subterranean mushroom people and an ancient skeletal dragon who has made the desert his final resting place. Watch out for rabid camels!
- The Steppe Plain
- This barren wasteland is the chosen home of a couple of ogres that cause no end of trouble to the nomadic peoples of this area. Stories also tell of an ancient barbaric warrior that will pass on his knowledge of battle to any that follow his school of fighting.
- Townsbridge
- This once growing village is now nothing but a scene of death and ultimate sorrow. The proud people of the town were murdered many years before and now walk the town as living corpses, searching eternally for their killers.
- Solace Cove
- This town across the western desert provides the best way of ocean transport in the realm. Accordingly, this has allowed for the incursion of pirates around the region, who plague the good sea-faring merchants to further their own gains.
- Reed Swamp
- The stifling swamp west of Araken's castle is home to all kinds of nasty beasts. The physical barrier of marshy pits and the natural barrier of horrific creatures presents a great defense for the Dragon Highlords against attacks by Duke Araken and his royal army.
- The Duke's Castle
- This sprawling fortress is the home of ruthless tyrant of Modrian, Duke Araken. A short visit into his shadowy dungeons will quickly make it apparent why many people wouldn't mind seeing Modrian break out of his iron grip.
- Darom's Home
- South of Modrian lies the fantastical home of the archwizard Darom. His mirror maze presents a maddening challenge to any who would trespass into his domain, but even this doesn't deter the many young apprentices seeking to learn from one of the greatest magicians of all time.
- The Hobgoblins
- These putrid caverns are home to a race of intelligent humanoids known to all as hobgoblins. Their nauseating stench can be smelled for miles around the subterranean dwelling, even with a great rock covering the entrance.
- The Elven Woods
- A small village in these peaceful woods acts as a hometown for a race of peaceful elves. Rumors also persist of a nearby druid, using his magic to raise up an army of fire elementals and freakishly enlarged forest animals.
- The Duergar City
- The evil dwarves known as Duergar overthrew the great dwarven clan BrightAxe and captured their northern stronghold. Now, they profane that fortress with their presence and harass travelers making their way through the northern forest.
- E.C. Junkyard
- The junkyard near the city of Electro Centralis is full of stoned punks and other examples of where a degree in philosophy will get you. Watch your step around the heavy machinery.
Mid-level Groups and Players
- The High Tower of Magic
- Located to the west of Modrian, nestled into the eastern foothills of the Feral Mountains, north of the highway, is said to be an ancient tower of arcane magic. The tower is filled with mages young and old, some inexperienced, and some masters.
- The Steading of the Hill Giants
- Lately the city of Istan and the surrounding area has been plagued by strange raids, carried out by ruthless and evil giants of all sorts. It seems that this state was precipitated by the recent attempts of Istan to log the forests north of the city...
- The Tunnels of the Lizard Men
- If you feel up for a bit of underwater adventuring, the lizard men under the swamp are always up for a good brawl. Maybe if you are bad enough, you can take on the king of the lizard men himself.
- The Circus of Modrian
- The circus has come to town! Unfortunately, the acts of the three rings aren't the cute cuddly creatures you would expect under the big top.
- Old Thalos
- This once great city has now been reduced to rubble, crumbling throughout its years of abandonment. Unconfirmed reports tell of a monstrous beholder that chased out the populace long ago and now makes its residence there.
- Neverwhere
- Explorers of the western desert report entering a strange area where monks revere the waters of a hand-shaped pool, and chant strange words over and over again. It is also said that deeper into the pool reveals a palace of great splendor, ruled over by a man who would take over the world.
- The Town of Mavernal
- Sequestered in the forest northwest of Istan, the mages of this town live out a peaceful existence creating and honing the spells they love. They welcome those that would enter their sanctuary, as long as those persons are fellow mages.
- Temple of Kharli
- The great mages of Mavernal tell horrific stories of what go on in this temple devoted to evil. Tales of gruesome sacrifices and a priestess that is malevolence incarnate are given as warnings to any who would try to find a way into this terrible place.
- Ogre Camp
- This encampment houses the greatest clan of ogres that has lived in this world for a very long time. They make their preparations up in their mountain stronghold, biding their time until they can launch a massive invasion.
- The Enchanted Wood
- Accounts of this forest are sketchy at best, as some of the stories coming from it are hard to believe. People tell of nymphs that seduce with a glance, and a race of dragons without any forearms that prowl the woods.
- Modrian Manor
- Tethered to the ground by a huge metal chain, this sprawling mansion rises high above the city of Modrian. Unable to deal with the terrible monster inside, the once-great benefactor of the city has fled, leaving it imprisoned there, alone and very hungry.
- The Great Pyramid
- Merchants traveling through the desert have reported the existence of a great number of sphinx, and most thinkers believe them to have originated from one of these great tombs. Archaeologists investigating these monuments have all been driven insane by what they saw, raving about an ancient mummy of incredible power.
- Arachnos
- This area is home to a vast contingent of spiders, ranging from the normal tiny harmless spiders to arachnids of horrific size. The huge web system is ruled over by Arachnos, the great empress of the spiders.
- Ruins of the Silver Tower
- Abandonment of the ancient religion has left the once great silver tower crumbling and dilapidated. Acolytes trying to restore the former beauty of the temple report the infestation of the place by vampires, although they disappeared too soon after to confirm the claims.
- Electro Power and Plumbing
- The power system of the city of Electro Centralis is a dangerous example of lax security codes. An uncovered turbine can easily suck an unwary person to their death, and the cyborg guards are quick to cover up such "accidents."
- Sub Electro
- The seamy underbelly of Electro Centralis is even more corrupt and filthy than the streets above. Its said that anyone can buy a pardon from the lawyer below the city, for the right price.
- E.C. Dockyards
- From these corrupt docks, the mafia of Electro Centralis controls its vast crime syndicate. Be careful where you go, or you might just end up wearing cement shoes and swimming with the fishies.
High-level Players
- The Dragon Highlord Fortress
- Shaded rumors tell of a hidden fortress located somewhere in the mountains west of the Reed Swamp, where the lizard men rule. The highlords are powerful warriors, dedicated to the service of the queen of evil dragons, Takhisis, otherwise known as Tiamat.
- Heaven
- This plane is home to the gods of goodness and purity, as a direct opposite to the fiery pits of hell. Here, the gods welcome peaceful good-loving devotees, but actively hunt down those that would profane their home with evil.
- The COSTAL Plane
- This wacky plane of existence is unfathomable by even the greatest sages of Calidan. No laws of matter or nature seem to be obeyed here, and no information can be gleaned from the strange canine ruler of the plane, who goes by the name of Corey.
- Caves of Learander
- The former dwarven king Learander resides in these caverns of the feral mountains. Not letting a little thing like death stop him, Learander continues his ongoing battle with the demons of Lord Graz'zt, neither side gaining quarter in the epic struggle.
- Mount Olympus
- Towering high above the ground looms the cloud-shrouded Hall of the Gods. Zeus rules the region from his throne of power with the aid of his mighty thunderbolt, although even he is ruled over by his shrewish wife.
- Ghenna
- Entering in from a barrow mound, any inklings of holding on to reality you may have had will slip away on this strange plane of existence. Creatures of varying origin fill the streets of Ghenna, most seeming extremely out of place for their surroundings.
- The Labyrinth of Time
- This maze of seamless black rock is a baffling puzzle where each section of wall looks the same as the last. As if this weren't bad enough, a mistaken wind of a clock can send you to an area better left unexplored.
- An Abandoned Keep
- Nestled in the center of the enchanted wood, this fallen castle is a testament to the incredibly emotional battle that took place there. A hunter from that region relates tunnels beneath the keep acting as a seat of power for the king of a large clan of trolls.
- Zhengi's Castle
- Above the feral mountains lies an ancient castle of evil. Stay undiscovered while venturing into this keep, or you might find yourself imprisoned in the dungeon, or the test subject of one of the Archlich Zhengi's vile experiments.
- Tower of Guiharia
- This huge silver tower rises high above the southern hills, acting as a beacon to all those who accept the beneficent goddess as their own. The tower is the gathering place of all levels of clerics, from lowly acolytes to the high priestess.
- Skullport
- A city beneath the tunnels of Undermountain, this town provides a place to relax for all kinds of criminals and outlaws without fear of imprisonment. The good elves of Modrian also warn of an illicit slave trade, headed up by a horrifying creature with many eyes.
- Undermountain
- The subterranean caverns are filled with a host of strange creatures, from the mundane to the extraordinary. It is also said that these caves are the origin of the drow, the race of militant dark elves beginning to make their presence on the surface world.
- The Ancient Temple
- On a small island in the Misty Sea once stood a secluded temple to the goddess of wisdom. The temple is now defiled by an evil creature, the most powerful medusa known to this plane.
- Cybertech Labs
- The scientists of Cybertech Labs use their facility south of Electro Centralis to research developments into the growing field of cybernetics. Some blame the recent disappearances of Electro citizens on the new laboratory, pointing to the amazing likeness between them and the guardian borgs newly acquired by the labs.
High-level Groups and High-level Remorts
- HELL
- Across the astral plane lies the 9 levels of the most infernal plane known to exist. A portal located in the fortress of dragon highlords deposits you into the top layer, the 'front parlor'... Avernus, the domain of the evil dragon Tiamat. Tiamat guards a connection to the next level of hell, which leads directly into the iron city of Dis. Deep inside this city, guarded by masses of devils lairs, lies Dispater, the ruler of the plane.
- The Astral Plane
- This vast expanse of space is populated by all numbers of devils, and strange creatures known as Slaadi. Inter-dimensional explorers might find the colored pools useful, as each leads you to another plane of existence.
- The Abyss
- Home to the nearly the entire demon race, the abyss is ruled by the most powerful demon of all, Lord Graz'zt. Continuing his neverending quest to conquer the entire realm, Graz'zt is locked in an endless struggle with his greatest enemy, King Learander.
- The Holy Grail
- The region north of the crescent mountains is home to some of the strangest creatures that ever walked the earth. Only here could a cute little bunny demolish a contingent of knights, and a dirty mud-collecting peasant spout off his views on monarchy.
- The Ravaged Country
- This once peaceful area was destroyed years ago by some disaster, unmatched in ferocity by any other. Hunters of this region also tell of seeing a huge beast of unparalleled power and consumed by an unquenchable desire for food.
